Luleå day tour – Storforsen

Get incredibly close to the power of nature, with a day tour to the Storforsen nature reserve. The largest unregulated rapids in Europe is a mighty show of whirling water which stretches out over five kilometres and breaks into a fall of 82 meters. Thanks to the powerful flow of water, the rapids never freeze, even in the coldest of winter. During this tour you will visit the Storforsen nature reserve with an experienced guide and will see the thundering river from up close. On the way to Storforsen you will drive through the rural countryside and learn more about the surrounding nature, history and wildlife. This 6-hour day tour from Luleå, is including lunch which is prepared over open fire by your guide.

About the rapids

The Pite River is one of the four unharnessed National Rivers of Sweden, stretching 400 kilometres from its glacial source to the sea. Each second 250 cubic meters of water passes by in Storforsen. That’s the same amount as an entire family uses in a year. When the spring flood is at its strongest, it can even reach up to 870 cubic meters per second.

Nature reserve Storforsen

From November, the pools of the river freeze over. When air temperatures drop very low, even part of the rapids freeze. Ice dams are formed and water is forced out into the surrounding forest. The water freezes around the trees and bushes of the riverbanks. Creating a unique winter scenery all covered in ice and snow. In the nature reserve you can find tracks from grouse, hares, squirrels, deer and reindeer. Also, there is a chance to see otter and mink looking for spots of open water, rapids and streams where they can fish.
