Day 1 Arrival at Luleå
Arrival at Luleå airport according to your own itinerary, you will be welcomed by our local guide, who will assist you with getting your rental car at the airport. On the short drive (7km) to your hotel in the city centre, you already get a good impression from the impressive Luleå river as you will cross the bridge which connects Luleå with the southern mainland. Depending on your arrival time you can choose to relax, visit one of the trendy cafes in the city centre, explore the nearby nature riding a Fatbike, or escape the city and let the tranquillity of the close by nature reserves overwhelm you. In the evening a 3 course dinner is served at your hotel.
Day 2: Luleå – Gammelstad – Kukkolafors (146km)
After the breakfast, you start driving in the direction of the UNESCO World Heritage site Gammelstad (9.7km). Gammelstad is home to a unique cultural environment. Here you can find the largest late medieval stone church in Northern Sweden, from 1492 and the largest and most well-preserved church town in Sweden. Here a guided tour is recommended.
After Gammelstad you continue driving to the cultural fishing place Kukkolafors. This picturesque village is located alongside the Torne river which forms the border between Sweden and Finland. Here you have perfect views of the rapids and can you taste the local specialty ‘smoked whitefish’. Bring a visit to the fishing museum or learn more about the history during a walk through the village.
Day 3 Kukkolaforsen – Arctic Circle – Kangos (228km)
Today you will start driving alongside the Torne River. With its impressive length of 520 kilometres, it runs from the ancient mountains in the west down to the coast in the east, where it flows out into the sea. While driving, you have fantastic views over the Torne River and at Finland on the other side of the river. You can bring a visit to The ‘Struve Geodetic Arc’ a part of another UNESCO word heritage site from Sweden. At Juoksengi you will pass the Arctic Circle and drive into the land of the Midnight Sun. After about 160km you will leave the Finnish border and continue driving more inland’s, still following the Torne River to Kangos. Your end destination for today, here you can relax, eat and sleep in a beautiful surrounding.
Day 4: Kangos – Icehotel – Kiruna (149km)
After the breakfast, you start driving in the direction of the world famous Icehotel (130km)in the village of Jukkasjärvi, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. The first part on the route today can be really quiet, be aware that there can be unexpected wildlife like reindeer or moose on the street. You will leave for a while the side of the Torne River but will see it again at the Icehotel, it’s this river who provides the Icehotel with its ice in winter. Be one of the first to experience Icehotel 365 during summer. Unlike the seasonal Icehotel, which melts each spring, Icehotel 365 uses solar technology to maintain its interior at sub-zero temperatures.. After the Icehotel it’s a short drive to your end destination for today Kiruna, a town rich in culture. It has been home for the Sami people for many generations. The Sami are one of the world’s indigenous peoples, and are working and living close to nature for centuries.
Day 5: Kiruna – Gällivare (122km)
In the morning there is enough time to explore Kiruna. Visit the city centre for authentic art and crafts or walk The Midnight Sun Trail on Luossavaara mountain, offering views of both the mining town and the mountain range (4.3 km and takes 1.5-2.5 h.) Kiruna is also undergoing an exciting transformation. The entire town is about to relocate, as the mine and ore deposits extend beneath the town centre. Never before has such a large community undergone this kind of transformation. If you want some insight in the ongoing city transformation we can recommend the guided city tour ‘A city in motion’ starting at Kiruna Lappland Tourist Center. In the midday it’s time to start driving to the next destination Gällivare, a small mining town between forest and mountain land. Located on the edge of the Laponia World Heritage Site.
Day 6: Gällivare – Jokkmokk – Arvidsjaur (248km)
Today you continue further south to the mythical place of Jokkmokk (95km) a natural meeting place for Sami people and a center for Sami culture. For more than 400 hundred years, the colorful Jokkmokk market has been celebrated annually. The town is spoilt with the finest ingredients from mountains and forests. Bring a visit to one of the local craft shops, learn more about the Sami culture in the Ájtte Museum or make a walk through the Alpine garden an oasis on the shores of Talvatis Lake, before you continue to you next destination Arvidsjaur about 100km south of the Arctic Circle. A large part of Arvidsjaur’s population is of Sámi heritage and about a dozen families work with reindeer herding in the forest. Here you will stay the night in your comfortable hotel.
Day 7 : Arvidsjaur – Storforsen – Treehotel (152km)
After the breakfast there is time to explore the city, visit the amazing Lappstaden in central Arvidsjaur or walk to the outer edge of town where you will find the historical museum and café Gamla Prästgarde, a popular place to visit. Your next destination will be the rapids of Storforsen in the Piteå river (95km). The rapids are one of the biggest in Europe and one of the most impressive sights in the region. In June the water flows 850m3 per second and produces an overwhelming sound. After this visit it’s a short drive to your end destination for today, the world famous Treehotel. Here you will stay at Britta’s pensionat, a homely environment from the 30’s to 50’s. In the pension is the reception and restaurant for the Treehotel hosted. If you want to stay more exclusive in one of the 7 design rooms from the Treehotel we can customise this trip for you. After checking in you can choose to relax, enjoy the optional sauna facilities or make a walk through the nearby nature area for viewing of the Treerooms. In the evening a 3 course dinner is served at the restaurant, which offers delicacies from the region and traditional Swedish dishes.
Day 8: Treehotel – Luleå airport (87.7km)
After the breakfast, the planning is depending on the schedule of your return flight. Maybe you have some time left, to do a short hike in the forest or for other activities? But if you have an early flight, then it’s time to start driving to Luleå airport. Return your rental car at the airport prior to your return flight.
