Lapland coast to mountains
Travel in a sustainable way through Swedish Lapland, from the coast to mountains by train. Starting in the coastal city of Luleå with a Northern Lights and Dogsledding tour, before proceeding to the mountain village of Abisko and even up to the world famous Aurora Sky Station. The distance (approx. 440km) between Luleå and Abisko you will travel by train over one of Europe’s northernmost train routes. You will cross the Arctic Circle and travel through endless forests in one of the world’s most unique landscapes. To complete your holiday you can customize your holiday further with optional activities like Snowmobiling, Ice fishing or Snowshoe walking.
The coastal city of Luleå
This iconic Swedish Lapland Holiday starts in Luleå, the largest city of Swedish Lapland. Located on the coast, 150km south of the Arctic Circle. Here you will stay 2 nights in a modern and centrally located hotel right next to the waterfront. From December, Luleå is a frozen wonderland of snow and ice trails, where you can ski, skate, walk and sled across the bay directly from the city centre. Located close to the Arctic Circle, means that from September until March you can, under good conditions, spot the magical Northern Lights!
Abisko National Park
From the coastal city of Luleå, the journey proceeds by train into the alpine surrounding of the Abisko National Park. About 200km north of the Arctic Circle. Here you will stay 2 nights by the STF Mountain Station, located in the heart of Abisko National park. Being located within the Arctic and very frequently inside the Aurora Oval means that during the winter, Abisko often experiences fantastic Northern Lights. A 20-minute ride brings you up to a height of 900 meters above sea level to visit the Aurora Sky Station, one of the best places on earth for Northern Lights viewing.






ITINERARY
Lapland Coast to Mountains | 5 days / 4 nights

Day 1 – Arrival day
Arrival Luleå Airport based on your flight schedule and transfer to your hotel. In Luleå you will stay in the 4-star Clarion Sense Hotel, labelled with the best level environmental classification. After checking in, the rest of the day is free for you to explore Luleå. Relax, stroll the charming city, visit on of the many trendy café or explore landmarks. Being the biggest city in Swedish Lapland, Luleå has remarkable restaurants which are recommended in the White Guide. The Swedish guide system for Sweden’s top restaurant and cafes. Whether you are looking for local delicacies or an international taste sensation – Luleå has it all.
Day 2 – Dogsledding and Northern Lights
After a good night sleep and enjoying a rich Scandinavian breakfast buffet it’s time to get ready to be outdoors. Today you will experience the ultimate Dogsledding adventure with your team of enthusiast and friendly Husky dogs. You will meet your guide at the hotel lobby and after a short transfer you arrive by the Husky kennel. The dogsled tours will go over frozen rivers and through snow covered forest, offering a great opportunity to see wildlife on the way. Together with your highly skilled guide and well-trained friendly Alaskan Husky dogs you will enjoy a high quality and unforgettable nature experience!
In the evening you will be picked up by your hotel and go on a hunt for the Northern Lights. During the tour you will learn about the different colours, get tips how to photograph them and learn about myths and mythology around this mysterious phenomenon from our ancient ancestors. You can choose between Northern Lights tour by car or a more active variant Northern Lights tour on snowshoes.
Day 3 – Crossing the Arctic Circle and night visit Aurora Sky Station
Today you will leave the coast behind you and travel further by train to the mountain village of Abisko. This unique sustainable journey across the Arctic landscape will bring you in a comfortable way far above the Arctic Circle. Upon arrival, it is about 5-min walking distance to your accommodation the STF Abisko Mountain Station. Situated in Abisko National Park, 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The resort is surrounded by Lapporten’s (The Lapponian Gate’s) characteristic U-shaped silhouette, the Abisko Mountain Range with Mount Nuolja and Torneträsk Lake. In the evening a unique night visit to the Aurora Sky Station is included.
Day 4 – Abisko National park
Waking up after a good night sleep, enjoy breakfast, fresh coffee before getting ready for another day in the Arctic. Today you can choose to spend the day on your own pace. There are different options to explore the beautiful Abisko National Park in your preferred way. You can explore the nearby surroundings on your own, rent ski’s or snowshoes which are supplied by your accommodation. Or choose from optional guided tours as snowmobiling, ice fishing or snowshoe walking. For the evening there are several tours available to chase the Northern Lights one more time, before your departure.
Day 5 – Departure Day
After all experiences during this Swedish Lapland Coast to Mountains holiday it’s time to travel homewards. Maybe you have some time left to relax or do an activity in the the area But if you have an early flight then it’s time to get ready and checkout of your hotel room. You will be picked up from the lobby of the Abisko Mountain station, the transfer to Kiruna Airport takes about 1.5 hour.
