Abisko is located about 200km north from the Arctic Circle. Here you find the landscape formation Tjuonavagge (Lapporten), Lake Torneträsk, Mount Nuolja and Abisko Canyon. Also the entrance to the 450 kilometre long Kungsleden (The King’s Trail) begins here. The town offers the least precipitation in whole of Sweden and is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights.
With its fresh, clear air and almost permanent cloud-free sky the circumstances in Abisko are optimal to see the Northern Lights. More or less active Northern Lights can be seen almost every night. Here you also have the possibilities to visit the Aurora Sky Station, situated on Mount Nuolja, 900 meters above sea level. The Lonely Planet has listed the ten best places in the world to experience light and chosen Aurora Sky Station as the best place to experience the Northern Lights.
Inside the Aurora Sky Station, an aurora exhibition emphasises observing and understanding the northern lights. The observations are made with the help of radio receivers and cameras. A scale model of the solar system helps to better understand the Aurora Borealis. Between September until March their are every night guided tours to the universe of Aurora Borealis (northern lights).
