Luleå, Swedish Lapland

Luleå is an exciting city on the coast of Swedish Lapland, just below the Arctic Circle and the capital of the northernmost county in Sweden.  It’s is a place with beautiful nature, interesting culture-life, great shopping and lots of sports events. The region has warm and sunny summers and cold winters with lots of snow.

Luleå has about 75,000 inhabitants, has the seventh biggest harbour in Sweden for shipping goods, a large steel industry and is a centre for extensive research. The Luleå University of Technology is one of Sweden’s 3 technical universities  and the northernmost university in Sweden.

UNESCO World Heritage site Gammelstad

The original town was situated where Gammelstad (Old Town) is situated today. The town had to be moved in 1649 to the current site, due to the post-glacial rebound that had made the bay too shallow for ships to enter. The Gammelstad Church Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

The archipelago consists of just over 1,300 islands and islets. The brackish water, between fresh and salt, makes the archipelago unique. It’s a fantastic nature area to explore while boating or kayaking and a popular summer destination. Daily ferries leave from the city centre during summer to the most popular islands; Hindersön, Brändöskär, Junkön, and to Klubbvikens havsbad on Sandön island.If you are staying in Luleå you still have easy access to all the fantastic activities available in the winter time.
