Skellefteå, Swedish Lapland

Located near the Bothnian coast in Västerbotten county. The city is a historically industrial city with mining being a large industry, especially for gold, hence the nickname “Gold Town”. Its s the southern entry into Swedish Lapland. There are five rivers in Skellefteå, three of which are classified as wild salmon rivers. Such a concentration of salmon waters cannot be found anywhere else in Sweden. Nearby Skellefteå is the church town of Lövanger, with 117 small red cottages and and listed as Cultural Environment of National Interest. There was once more than 70 church towns like this in Sweden. Today, 16 of them are preserved, including the Gammelstad church town in Luleå, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO .

Not far from Skellefteå is the village of Buträsk. Since 1872, home of the Västerbottensost cheese production. In time Västerbottensost became Sweden’s most treasured cheese, and today it is a favourite among award-winning chefs in both Sweden and internationally. With its characteristic “W”, the trademark has a clear and strong position in Swedish food culture.
