As the winter season approaches, the forecast is looking bright for astronomy enthusiasts and winter enthusiasts alike. The expected Solar Maximum is all set to illuminate the night sky with breathtaking displays of Northern Lights. Swedish Lapland is the ideal destination to witness this cosmic spectacle. The Solar Maximum is expected to occur during the winter season of 2024-2025. A rare phenomenon that happens when the Sun’s magnetic field is at its strongest, causing particles to be ejected towards the Earth, resulting in spectacular displays of the Northern Lights. The last Solar Maximum took place in 2013, making this a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Swedish Lapland

For those planning to visit Swedish Lapland, this is an opportunity not to be missed! The region is known for its immersive winter landscapes, snow-covered forests, and frozen lakes. And with the Solar Maximum expected to bring increased activity to the Northern Lights, visitors can expect a visual feast of swirling colors and patterns in the night sky. Imagine witnessing the aurora borealis dance across the sky, with swirling curtains of green, blue, and purple hues painting the night canvas.

Ice Bathing, a fun and freezing adventure

Ice bath Luleå

For upcoming winter season we will offer a new typical Nordic experience. Between December to March you can enjoy a hot sauna in combination with ice bathing in central Luleå. The feeling you will get is euphoric and it will be an experience you will always remember. If you ever have experienced the benefits of putting yourself out of your comfort zone, this is a big one! Winter swimming is an old Nordic tradition. Some say there are health benefits, and the feeling of boosted energy you get after getting up of the cold water surely implies that!

Nordic Experience

This typical Nordic experience starts in the preheated sauna, besides the frozen Luleå river. Here you will meet the other winter swimmers (max 6) and get advice from the instructor before getting into the ice cold water. You will also be guided through the activity, so you get the best experience from your stay in the ice bath. If you prefer a private experience it’s also possible to book the whole sauna.

When you get out of the water, standing outside in your swimming suit in -10 degrees Celsius feels like no big deal. Your body’s survival mechanism is working full time, and you will soon begin to feel sensations you’ve never experienced before. Relax and enjoy this moment of triumph for a while, this feeling that anything is possible and that life has just begun.

Northern Lights – Autumn Equinox

Northern Lights

The coming of the Autumn Equinox 2023 is on Saturday 23 September. It brings the start of the astronomical autumn in the northern hemisphere, a season known for red and yellow colours in the forest.  But did you know it can also colour the night sky green? As the month continues you’ll slowly start to notice colder weather and  shorter days. But what exactly is the Earth doing to cause these seasonal changes? It’s all in our planets tilt.

Our planet turns around the sun at a slight angle of about 23.5 degrees . This little lean is responsible for all of our seasons. So when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun it’s winter up here.  But it’s summer for everyone down in the Southern Hemisphere. The Spring equinox is a transitional period when the Northern Hemisphere begins to lean towards the sun, ushering in spring.

One strange side effect of the equinox is a dramatically increased likelihood of Northern Lights – Aurora Borealis. The magnetic storms that flare like ghostly fire in our atmosphere. For Northern Lights to happen, the Earth’s magnetic field and the magnetic field of the solar wind have to connect. Earth’s tilt at the equinoxes appears to orient the planet’s magnetic field in a position that’s ideal for the solar wind to create these illuminating electron collisions.

Northern Lights tours – Luleå

To increase your change to see this natural phenomena we offer Northern Lights tours from September to April from Luleå in the most northern part of Sweden. Northern Lights tours by car on snowshoes, snowmobile, dogsled and kicksled. Together with an experienced guide you will go on a hunt for searching the magical Northern Lights and learn more about this natural wonder.

Swedish Lapland

Swedish Lapland is Sweden’s northernmost destination. It is the perfect place to experience natural contrasts unlike any other. It is naturally isolated from the rest of the world, being sparsely populated and having its natural openness. About a quarter of a million people, 2.6 % of Sweden’s population live here, resulting in a density of approx. 3 persons/km2. Besides, Swedish Lapland’s tradition and Sámi culture are still very much alive, entwined with reindeers. Some parts of Swedish Lapland have more sled dogs than inhabitants. Swedish Lapland is located within the Aurora oval and barely has any light pollution, the region therefore offers great opportunities to see the magical northern lights!
