Guided tour into the frozen Luleå Archipelago

Experience the feeling of driving across a frozen sea by car. In Luleå you can reach islands such as Hindersön, Junkön, Sandön and Storbrändön by car during winter. Each winter about 30km of roads are being prepared by the Luleå municipality as service for both visitors and residence. Driving on the ploughed ice roads is risk free. The strength of the ice is extremely thorough and careful checked by test drilling to be safe for travels.

On this tour an experienced guide will take you on a comfortable sightseeing trip into the Luleå Archipelago. There are several roads to choose from and stops are regularly made so you are able to walk on the ice, make pictures and experience the tranquillity of the endless fields of ice and snow. The tours are in small groups of max. 8 persons and during the tour your guide will tell you about the unique local nature and history. Short break Swedish Lapland

SHORT BREAK SWEDISH LAPLAND
Luleå is located on the coast of Swedish Lapland. With a total of 1,300 islands its a unique environment. Between December and April the sea freezes up to a meter thick ice which is perfect for winter activities. During this unique short holiday in Luleå you can enjoy nature at its best and experience  activities like dog sledding and snowmobiling and have the chance to see the magical Northern lights in the evening. In a 5 days program you will get a good impression of the Arctic way of living. Starting the first day with a journey into the forests and lead you through an adventurous and educational excursion. You will learn how to use snowshoes and take a break in a traditional Sámi hut, where together you will make a typical outdoor wilderness lunch. Here, on the reindeer pelts you will enjoy your meal around the fire and relax.

You will stay in a genuine small scale accommodation by the sea. The main building is a log cabin that includes a restaurant, lounge and relaxation area. Luleå winter activities 2018/19

LULEÅ WINTER ACTIVITIES 2018/19
For upcoming winter season we have many new activities to choose from! Experience the thrill of snowmobiling or a dogsledding tour or enjoy the serenity of the wilderness on snowshoes. We also offer this year day tours to Nature Reserve Storforsen a perfect example of a majestic river landscape in Norrland. The Pite River is one of the four unharnessed National Rivers of Sweden and the rapids are one of the biggest unrestricted water rapids in Europe.

The river is stretching 400 kilometres from its glacial source to the sea! In winter when air temperatures drop really low, even the rapids freeze. An ice dam forms and water is forced into out into the surrounding forest, which freezes over around the trees and bushes of the river banks into a unique winter scenery. During winter the river banks are often lined with tracks from grouse, hares, squirrels, elk and reindeer. Also there is a chance to see otter and mink looking for spots of open water, rapids an streams where they can fish.

Luleå Ice Track – Dutch speed skater Kjeld Nuis reaches 93 km/h

Wednesday, 28 March 2018- Luleå Ice track. Having won two Olympic Gold medals in both 1000 and 1500 metres in South Korea, conditions were ideal for the Dutch speedskater Kjeld Nuis to reach high speeds in Luleå – Swedish Lapland. Setting a new world record as fastest man on ice! Luleå Travel was part in this project with accommodating everybody involved in two of our traditional Tipi tents on the ice, during daytime. The smallest tent as private hideout for Kjeld Nuis and the biggest tent – Stratus 72 as working, eating and lounge area for up to 40 persons crew. It has been a great project to be involved and it’s good to see that the Luleå ice track is used in so many ways during the winter season!

The tents can be set up pretty much anywhere, even on the ice. We have a range of tipis you can use, on their own or in some cases joined. The biggest and most impressive of our tents is the Stratus 72 with a diameter of 10.3m and 7m height, it can host up to 60 people seated. Truly an eye catching and impressive structure. The unique design of the tents allows you to be able to lift all or some of the sides to allow the Swedish summer sun in or take advantage of a spectacular view. Luleå’s ice track & roads

In this list over natural wonders in the world to visit, Luleå’s ice track and ice roads are positioned at the 45th place out of 50!

This isn’t the only place in the world where the sea freezes over, but the town’s location — jutting out into the sea — makes the frozen water a welcome extension of the town’s streets in the depths of winter. From December to February, locals skate, snow-trek and sled across the bay, while some roads — across the sea — are passable only in winter.

Welcome on the website of Luleå Travel!  We are a brand new travel agency in Luleå, an exciting city at the coast of Swedish Lapland. Here we live between the islands from the Archipelago on the one side and endless forests and mountains on the other side. Skiing, dog sledding or ice-skating in the winter months and hiking, kayaking and sailing in the summer months. Swedish Lapland has it all!  With Luleå Travel we were part of the organisation of the international ice skating event ‘Schaatsen Luleå’ attracting local participants and coordinating all winter activities.

We are true nature lovers and travelled intensively over the word. Beside private travels we worked for many years with tourism in the Arctic regions.

Swedish Lapland has so much to offer and we like to share our love of adventure with you. Our insider’s knowledge and key contacts in each destination allow us to offer unique experiences.
