Travel through Swedish Lapland with round-the-clock daylight from the coast to the mountains in 6 days! Discover the vibrant coastal city of Luleå before continuing your holiday towards the mountain village of Abisko. The distance (approx. 440km) between Luleå and Abisko you will travel by train over one of Europe’s northernmost scenic train routes. You will cross the Arctic Circle and go through endless forests in one of the world’s most unique landscapes. To enrich your summer holiday, this package includes a visit to Moose & Reindeer Park, the UNESCO World Heritage site Gammelstad (Old Church Town) as well as a chairlift up to the STF Aurora Sky Station. Creating an even better summer memory, you may also opt for extension overnights in the floating Arctic Bath, up in the wood Treehotel, or chill in the ICEHOTEL!
Luleå, 150 km below the Arctic Circle
Located by the Bothnian Bay, Luleå is surrounded by over 1,300 islands, the brackish sea, river valleys and vast forestland. The Midnight Sun allows diversified outdoor activities from kayaking, biking, berries-picking and al fresco dining. The UNESCO World Heritage site Gammelstad is located about 10km more land inwards and is the best-preserved church town in Sweden You will stay 3 nights in the 4-star Elite Stadshotellet right in the center of the city, next to various cafes, restaurants and on walking distance from the water front.
Abisko, 200 km above the Arctic Circle
Next to the Norwegian border is the high mountain ranges of Abisko. Here you will stay 2 nights in the STF Abisko Mountain Station close to the Abisko National Park. Over the Ice Ages, unique mountain landscapes have been sculpted in Abisko. In summer, Abisko is the hikers’ dream paradise. Abisko and the surrounding area provides several scenic hiking trails around the so-called Swedish Alpines and the charming Lake Torneträsk.
ITINERARY
Lapland Coast to Mountains | 6 days / 5 nights
Day 1 – Arrival day
Arrival at Luleå airport based on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to your hotel – Elite Stadshotellet. On the short drive (9km) to your hotel, you already get a good impression from the impressive Luleå river as you will cross the bridge which connects Luleå with the southern mainland.
Your hotel of the upcoming nights is ideally located on ‘Storgatan’, Luleå’s main street. Along the street you will find different cafes, restaurants with outdoor seating and shops. This classic hotel, dating back to 1903, has a majestic entrance hall and an impressive banquet room in a French Renaissance style. After settling your luggage, it is time to start enjoying your round-the-clock daylight in Luleå!
Optional: Evening Cruise with Shrimp Dinner Buffet This is one of the most popular cruises around Luleå’s beautiful archipelago (3h).
Day 2 – Meet a Moose and UNESCO site Gammelstad
After a good night sleep and enjoying your breakfast buffet, you will meet your guide in the hotel lobby and start your wonderful day in Luleå! First you will visit a nearby Moose & Reindeer Park, then to be continued with a guided tour to the UNESCO World Heritage site Gammelstad – The Old Church Town. Most of the church town is still in the same style as in the 17th century.
Luleå has a wide, exciting range of restaurants and cafés. Here you will find everything from local Swedish Lapland delicacies to international food from all over the world often based on local ingredients from the nearby wilderness and farms. Day 3 – Experience Swedish Nature
After breakfast, your experienced guide will meet you to explore one of the nearby nature reserves. The walks are taken at a leisure pace, where no special experience is required. During the walk you will learn more about local flora and fauna and the history of the region. A stop will be made for tea/coffee made in the traditional way, above open fire. You may also have chances to pick seasonal berries and mushrooms. This tour is 3 hours from pickup to drop off at your accommodation. If you are interested in longer more intense hikes, we also offer to 5 hour forest hikes. Around mid-summer (late June-early July), we can also switch this Nature Walk tour to evening as a Midnight Sun Hike.
There are no activities planned for the rest of the day. The surrounding of Luleå offers many possibilities to enjoy the sun and nature. If you are interested in more outdoor activities like fishing or kayaking, we can easily arrange for you.
Day 4 – The Swedish Alpines in Abisko
Today you will continue northwards to the small mountain village of Abisko by train. During the comfortable train ride from Luleå to Abisko, you will cross the Arctic Circle and travel through one of the most unique landscapes. Upon arrival, it is about 5-minutes easy walk to the STF Abisko Mountain Station (approx. 350m distance). Located in the Northernmost part of Swedish Lapland. Abisko and the surrounding area have a lot of breath-taking hiking trails around the so-called Swedish Alpines and the charming Lake Torneträsk. During your stay in Abisko, a return chairlift ticket is included for you to ride up to the STF Aurora Sky Station, 900 meters above sea level, to discover the floral nature of Mount Nuolja. Between late-June to mid-July, you can also take the chairlift ride in the evening to experience the magic midnight sun from a different angle of the world!
Day 5 – Abisko National Park
After a refreshing breakfast, you can choose to explore the beautiful Abisko National Park in your preferred way. You may choose one of the below optional activities to discover the underground of Abisko, or hike up to the floral Mount Nuolja, or enjoy the serenity of Kärkevagge Valley and the Lake Trollsjön.

Day 6 – Departure Day
After daily having new experiences it’s time to travel home. Depending on your flight schedule, maybe you have some time left to relax in this Northernmost part of Swedish Lapland. If you have an early flight, then it is time to get ready and check out of your hotel room. A transfer will be arranged for you from Abisko to Kiruna Airport.
