Between December to April the city is covered by snow and ice. The Luleå River and the archipelago are frozen. You can ski, skate, sled, walk and even drive on the ice tracks and ice roads stretching all the way to the frozen sea. ITINERARY
Luleå Winter Break | 4 days / 3 nights
Day 1 – Arrival day
Arrival at Luleå airport based on your flight schedule, you will be welcomed by our local guide. On the short drive (9km) to your hotel, you already get a good impression from the impressive Luleå river as you will cross the bridge which connects Luleå with the southern mainland. The rest of the day is free for you to explore Luleå. You can relax, stroll the charming city and enjoy a Swedish Fika. The city features top-notch culinary experience from Nordic fine-dining cuisine to cozy cafes and bars for those who want to experience the renowned Luleå nightlife.
Tonight you will stay in the ultramodern 4-star hotel in the middle of Luleå city center. Clarion Sense Hotel is a 9-storeys newly hotel with a “gold” (the best level) environmental classification. Its restaurant, Skybar as well as spa facility are located at the 8th and 9th floors with panorama views of the beautiful Northern Harbour.
Day 2 – Dogs Sledding tour and free midday
After a good night sleep and enjoining from a rich Scandinavian breakfast buffet it’s time to get ready. Today you will experience the ultimate dog-sledding adventure with your team of enthusiast and friendly Husky dogs. You will meet your guide at the hotel lobby and after a short transfer you arrive by the Husky kennel. The dogsled tours will go over frozen rivers and through snow covered forest, offering a great opportunity to see wildlife on the way. If you are lucky you might even spot reindeer or a moose on your trip. Together with your highly skilled guide and well-trained friendly Alaskan Husky dogs you will enjoy a high quality and unforgettable nature experience!
On this tour, you are sitting together with 3 to 4 other people on the sled and the guide is standing behind you mushing the dogs. You may also upgrade the tour to drive your own sled, which you have control over your team of Husky’s. You set of in pairs, where you have the possibility to rotate position during the tour. Supplement of SEK 400 per person.
Around 13:00 you will be back in the city center of Luleå. For the rest of the day there are no activities planned. You may enjoy the hotel spa facilities and its all-season saunas (at own expense). The hotel spa on the top floor is a place for relaxation and peace of mind, recovery and well-being. Take a dip at the warm-water pool with fantastic views of Luleå’s surroundings. You can also grab a drink at the Skybar, located at the 8th floor of your hotel with the best view in town!
Day 3 – Northern Lights tour
During day time there are no activities planned. You can choose to relax and spend the day on your own pace, or choose from additional activities to complete your Luleå Winter Break. Luleå Travel offers more than 20 activities, where you can choose from adrenaline driven snowmobile tours to close to nature snowshoe walking tours.
In the evening you will be picked up by your hotel and go on a hunt for the Northern Lights by car. During the tour you will learn about the different colours, get tips how to photograph them and learn about myths and mythology around this mysterious phenomenon from our ancient ancestors. For a supplemt price of SEK 200 you can also choose for a more active variant ´Northern Lights tours on Snowshoes´
Day 4 – Departure Day
After daily having new experiences it’s time to travel home. Depending on your flight schedule, maybe you have some time left to explore some of the landmarks, to name a few, the Luleå Cathedral, Kulturen Hus (Culture House), the ice tracks on the Northern Harbour and the old crane at Southern Harbour. If you have an early flight, then it is time to get ready and check out of your hotel room. You will be picked up from the lobby of the hotel and transfer to Luleå Airport (or train station).
