Day 4 – Day trip to UNESCO World Heritage Gammelstad, Arctic Circle & Jokkmokk
Start the day with a guided tour to the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Gammelstad Old Church Town. Gammelstad is located about 10 km more inland in Luleå and it’s the district’s main cultural symbol. Your guide will bring you back in history, to the time Northern Sweden was still a so called no man’s land. Gammelstad is more than 400 years old and is the best preserved church town in Sweden.
Continue the tour to cross the Arctic Circle before heading to Jokkmokk. Just north of the Arctic Circle, Jokkmokk has always been a traditional meeting place for Sámi people’s trade, gatherings and festivals. Going into Jokkmokk, you will visit the Ájtte Sámi Museum. It tells the story of Sápmi, the land, the people, the life and survival in a demanding climate and environment. It is a story set in the wetlands, forests and mountains. Take the opportunity to search for hidden gems in the local handicrafts shops or visit a local silver workshop before returning back to Luleå.
Transfer distance Luleå to Jokkmokk 170km one way, approx. 2.5h driving. Including Arctic Circle crossing.
