During this  holiday in Swedish Lapland, you will explore the Arctic region of Kiruna. A destination that offers genuine, authentic and small-scale experiences with focus on people and encounters. During 5 days, you will join a Sámi family to learn more about their daily life as a reindeer herder far north of the Arctic Circle. Get surrounded by reindeers, take a lesson of lasso-throwing, and ride on reindeer sledges. What makes this holiday more memorable is that you will sit with the local Sámi around the open fire in a Lávvu (Sámi tent). Taste the special Sámi food and coffee brewed over the fire. A unique holiday filled with the Sámi culture. What’s more, you will also have the opportunities to visit the world famous ICEHOTEL and take part in a thrilling dogsledding tour with a team of friendly huskies.

Kiruna, Swedish Lapland

The Sápmi region is the land that stretches over the northern part of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. Even though Sámi people are now living in modern society, they still follow their heritage, custom and beliefs. Kiruna shares a long history with the indigenous Sámi people and culture which is visible in the daily society. Besides it’s location within the Auroral Oval offers fantastic opportunities to see the northern lights from September to March. If clear weather, Northern Lights can be seen almost every night during the dark season.


You will stay 4 nights in the comfortable Scandic Kiruna, the newest hotel in the new city center. The hotel restaurant serves lunches and dinners prepared with local ingredients. You will also be able to relax in the hotel sauna or gym with a great view to the Kiruna city. In the evening you can enjoy a local brewed beer in the hotel Sky Bar. Lean back with a drink and view over the magnificent Swedish mountains. With luck, you may catch the magical northern lights from the bar!

Sami Culture Winter Holiday | 5 days / 4 nights

Day 1 – Arrival day

Welcome to the Arctic capital of Swedish Lapland! On arrival to Kiruna Airport, you land 150km north from the Arctic Circle into the northernmost city of Sweden. During this holiday, you will stay 4 nights in the comfortable Scandic Kiruna, the newest hotel in the new city center situating right next to the new town hall. The hotel restaurant serves lunches and dinners prepared with local ingredients.  In the evening you can enjoy a local brewed beer in the hotel Sky Bar. Lean back with a drink and view over the magnificent Swedish mountains.

Day 2 – Sámi & Reindeer Experience

Reindeer husbandry is both a central part of Sámi people’s daily life, as well as an important income source for many Sámi. Today you will get so close to the reindeers that you will be able to notice the different reindeer characters. Some are very calm, and some are adventurous. But many of them are social and love interacting with people, so feeding them is a truly fun encounter. You will also go for a short ride on the wooden sledge driven by reindeers through the snow-covered forest.  Included in the tour is some traditional Sámi recipe like Suovas (smoked reindeer meat) on flatbreads or potatoes and locally-picked lingon berries. You sit around the campfire together with the herder in a Lávvu. Listen to their storytelling about the land and their interaction with the forest and the weather.

Day 3 – Dogsledding & Meet a Sámi Family

In the morning a short transfer will bring you to the nearby Husky kennel. Going on a dogsledding tour is a unique experience in many ways. You will sit comfortable on warm reindeer skins and the sled will be driving by your guide. This iconic winter experience is sure to leave you with some fantastic memories. During the midday you have some free time to discover the new city center. Near your hotel there are many shops with Sami handicraft, delicacies, clothing and souvenirs. In case you are interested in learning more about how Kiruna is transforming its city, you may take a city tour or the LKAB underground iron-ore mine guided tour.  In the evening a Sámi guide will pick you up from the hotel. You will be offered a Sámi family dinner with traditional specialties, including a slideshow about the Sámi culture, traditions and the Arctic nature.

Day 4 – Visit to the World’s First ICEHOTEL & Northern Lights tour

After a good night sleep and enjoying a rich Scandinavian breakfast buffet, a taxi transfer will take you to world’s first ICEHOTEL. Lunch and a non-alcoholic drink at the ICEBAR are included in your visit. Before heading back to the hotel, you may check the souvenir shop. Tonight you will chase the magical Northern Lights one more time. The guide will check where the best possibilities to see the northern lights within 125km around Kiruna. With a minivan you will be taken to hunt Aurora Borealis. This is the perfect tour to maximize your opportunity of seeing this stunning natural phenomenon of northern lights.

Day 5  – Departure day

Today it is time to say goodbye. You can look back to an outstanding week in Europe’s last wilderness in Swedish Lapland that you probably will never forget. Depending on your flight schedule a transfer will be arranged for you to Kiruna Airport.
