This winter holiday is designed for travellers who wish to fulfil their winter dreams! It combines Northern light hunting, Arctic Circle crossing, Santa Claus Village, Icebreaker adventures as well as Lapland cultural interactions in 5 days. It is a perfect package for travellers with limited holiday time but wish to experience the most.
The program features high quality half-board accommodations with 2 nights in a Glass Villa to enjoy the magical Northern Lights from your warm bed and 2 nights in a Spa Hotel in Luleå city centre, the biggest city of Swedish Lapland.
Finnish Lapland – Rovaniemi and Kemi
Visit the famous Santa Claus Village and join an Icebreaker adventure. The Santa Claus Village lies right on the Arctic Circle where the line is marked. Here you may greet and take a photo with the Santa, shop dozens of Finnish design products as well as send postcards in the Santa’s post office. In the Icebreaker adventure, you can feel the massive power of the Icebreaker. You can also swim in the iced ocean with the warm floating suit to complete your Winter Bucket List!
Swedish Lapland – Luleå and Jokkmokk
Take part in a Northern Light hunting tour together with an experienced guide to go out in the dark winter night to chase the magical northern light, where you will experience the amazing Swedish Lapland winter evenings. You will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Gammelstad Old Church Town and the village of Jokkmokk, the centre of Sámi culture. Besides of crossing the Arctic Circle, you will meet a Sámi family and reindeers in their winter camp. You can also check out genuine Sámi handicrafts of silver, forging, tin, wooden mugs and more in the village of Jokkmokk.
ITINERARY
Winter Bucket List | 5 days / 4 nights
Day 1 – Home to Kemi, Finland
Your accommodation of tonight sits well in Finnish nature nearby the City of Kemi on the coast. The Villas with glass roof and huge windows offer you an incredible view of the Bay of Bothnia. In the nights, you can put your feet up, lay down in the warm and comfortable bed to observe the magical Northern lights, starry sky, snowy seaside and Finnish forest.
Day 2 – Day Tour to Meet the Santa & Cross the Arctic Circle
The highlight of the day is to meet the Santa and his Rudolf!
After breakfast, you will be ready to experience the Christmas magic! Your guide will meet you at the hotel lobby and transfer you to the hometown of Santa Claus, Rovaniemi. The journey takes about 1.5 hours. Upon arriving the Santa Claus Village, the Santa is already waiting for you in his office. Take a chance to whisper your Christmas wishes on his ear and take a picture with the Santa. In the Village, the Arctic Circle border is both marked on the ground and visible in the air. You will cross the Arctic Circle and receive a certificate. You may also shop Finnish design handicrafts and taste some local Finnish food in the shopping arcade. Before leaving the Santa Claus Village, not forget to mail postcards back home at the Santa’s Post Office.
Day 3 – Icebreaker Adventure and transfer to Luleå, the Biggest City of Northern Sweden
After a good night sleep and enjoying your breakfast, it is time to check out from the hotel and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime on board of an Icebreaker! Imagine white frozen sea which never storms, endless dramatic white as far as an eye can catch. Listen to the sound of crackling ice, crashed ice blocks rise from the icebreaker hull and letting dark water splashing out. The icebreaker makes a pool free of ice and you can take a swim in the dark icy water, in flotation survival suit.
In the midday you will cross the border to Sweden during your transfer to Luleå, the biggest city in Swedish Lapland. Here you will find many stylish cafes, restaurants as well as local and international brands for shoppers. Tonight you will stay in a Spa hotel in the middle of Luleå city center.
In the evening you will go together with an experienced guide on a Northern Lights tour. Your guide will use his experience, combined with local weather and aurora forecasts to make the best possible decision about where to look for the Northern lights. You will be taken off the beaten track to the best places to spot most thrilling natural phenomena the world has to offer.
Transfer distance Kemi (Finland) to Luleå (Sweden) 160km, approx. 2h driving. Including border crossing.
Day 4 – Day trip to Arctic Circle, Sámi family visit and UNESCO World Heritage
Today your guide will pick you up at 07:30 and head towards the Arctic Circle and Jokkmokk (2.5 hours drive). Just north of the Arctic Circle, Jokkmokk has always been a traditional meeting place for Sámi people’s trade, gatherings and festivals. You will visit a Sámi family in their winter camp. Spend a couple of relaxing hours for all your senses, listen to the sparkling fire while you enjoy a hot steaming coffee prepared on open fire. In the coral the reindeer will meet you curiously and you will be able to feed them and get really close.
Going into Jokkmokk, you will visit Ájtte Sámi Museum. It tells the story of Sápmi, the land, the people, the life and survival in a demanding climate and environment. Take the opportunity to search for hidden gems in the local handicrafts shops or visit a local silver workshop before returning to Luleå.
On the way back to Luleå, your guide will show you the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Gammelstad. Gammelstad is located about 10 km more inland in Luleå and it’s the district’s main cultural symbol. It has more than 400 years old history and is the best preserved church town in Scandinavia. Around 19:00 you will be back to the hotel.
Transfer distance Luleå to Jokkmokk 170km one way, approx. 2.5h driving. Including Arctic Circle crossing.
Day 5 – Departure Day
After all experiences during this Winter holiday it’s time to travel homewards. Depending on the schedule of your return flight, you maybe have some time left to enjoy the hotel spa facilities and its all-season saunas relaxation. You can also choose from other activities we offer to enrich your experience before heading home.
If you have an early flight, then it is time to get ready and check out of your hotel room. You will be picked up from the lobby of the hotel and after a short transfer (10 minutes) you arrive at Luleå Airport (or train station).
This itinerary is a guide for you. We can customise this further based on your interests and wishes. Luleå Travel is flexible to extend services, for example taxi rental in Kemi-Rovaniemi, airport transfer to different airports as well as extension of hotel stays.
It is also possible to start the tour package in Luleå and end in Kemi at same cost.
