The Silver Road | Fly & Drive | 6 dagen / 5 nachten
Day 1 Arrival at Luleå
Arrival at Luleå airport according to your own itinerary, you will be welcomed by our local guide, who will assist you with getting your rental car at the airport. On the short drive (7km) to your hotel in the city centre, you already get a good impression from the impressive Luleå river as you will cross the bridge which connects Luleå with the southern mainland. Depending on your arrival time you can choose to relax, visit one of the trendy cafes in the city centre, explore the nearby nature riding a Fatbike, or escape the city and let the tranquillity of the close by nature reserves overwhelm you. In the evening a 3 course dinner is served at your hotel.
Day 2: Luleå – Gammelstad –Arctic Circle – Jokkmokk (171km)
After the breakfast, you start driving in the direction of the UNESCO World Heritage site Gammelstad (9.7km). Here you can find the largest late medieval stone church in Northern Sweden, from 1492 and the largest and most well preserved church town in Sweden with more than 400 church cottages. Here a guided tour is recommended. After Gammelstad you continue driving alongside the Luleå river, just before you reach your end destination for today you will pass the Arctic Circle. A few kilometres more and you will arrive in the mythical place of Jokkmokk. A natural meeting place for Sami people and a centre for Sami culture for more than 400 years. Here you can bring a visit to one of the local craft shops or learn more about the Sami culture in the Ájtte Museum.
Day 3 Jokkmokk – Storforsen – Arvidsjaur (195km)
Today the route will bring you more south to the village of Arvidsjaur. But first you will visit the rapids of Storforsen(98km) part of the Piteå river. The rapids are one of the biggest in Europe and one of the most impressive sights in the region. In June the water flows 850m3 per second and produces an overwhelming sound. The area is well provided with walkways that allow you to have a look at the rapids safely from the edge of the river. After Storforsen it’s time to continue driving to your next destinations Arvidsjaur. Here you can visit the amazing Lappstaden. The largest preserved Sami village in Sweden, they were used by the forest Sami people for church visits. To learn more about the Sami people and their culture we recommend to join a guided evening tour, offered daily in the summer. In the evening a 3 course dinner is served at your hotel.
Day 4: Arvidsjaur – Arjeplog (181km)
In the morning there is enough time to explore Arvidsjaur or drink a Swedish Fika at the outer edge of town where you will find the historical museum and café Gamla Prästgardent. After leaving Arvidsjaur you will start driving on the historical Silver Road E95 to Arjeplog. The name refers to the transport of silver ore from the Norwegian border to the harbours following rivers and lakes. Transport was mainly done by Sami people, with their reindeer drawn sledges. Close to Arjeplog you have breathtaking panorama views from the peak of the Galtispouda. The deepest lake from Sweden (-221mtr.) Lake Hornavan, lies just next to the city. Arjeplog is an archipelago near the mountains, a unique environment with 8,727 lakes. The Silver Museum is a cultural treasure and a must see, the collection of the Sami silver is the largest in the world. In this beautiful surrounding you will stay the night in your comfortable hotel.
Day 5: Arjeplog – Skellefteå(244km)
After the breakfast you firs start driving on a more southern route. On this road you will drive alongside the water and can visit an authentic Sami Reindeer herding family, meet reindeer’s and learn more about Sami practices and customs. After continuing the road you will soon reach the E45, which connects you with the Silver Road in the direction of Skellefteå. The city is the most southern destination in Swedish Lapland a vibrant city by the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. Your hotel is located in a beautiful natural setting at Skellefteå’s oldest cultural area, beside the river. On walking distance you have Nordanå. A scenic culture an open air recreation area close to the town centre and even closer by you have the Lejonströmsbron dated 1737, the oldest wooden bridge in Sweden.
Day 6: Skellefteå – Luleå airport (132km)
After the breakfast, the planning is depending on the schedule of your return flight. Maybe you have time to visit the city centre of Skellefteå or make a stop on the way in Piteå. But if you have an early flight then it’s time to start driving to Luleå airport. Return your rental car at the airport prior to your return flight.
