Kiruna – The northernmost city of Sweden

Located 200km north of Arctic Circle, Kiruna is Sweden’s northernmost city. It keeps Sweden’s highest mountain Kebnekaise and has the world’s largest underground iron-ore mine. It’s location inside the Auroral oval is  perfect for Northern Lights viewing. Kiruna is a part of Sápmi and has been home for many generations of Sámi people.

ITINERARY

New Year in Swedish Lapland, Kiruna | 5 days / 4 nights

Arrival Day

Your journey starts when you arrive in Kiruna, 200km north of the Arctic Circle. A short transfer will bring you to the centrally located Elite Frost Kiruna hotel. Settle into your comfortable room and enjoy the winter views. The rest of the day is yours to relax; you might walk through the snowy streets or simply unwind. If the sky is clear, look for a Northern Lights display over the city.

Day 2 – Dogsledding  & Rooftop Spa

Start your day with a classic Arctic activity: a dogsledding passenger tour through Kiruna’s winter wilderness. You’ll be well-prepared in warm gear, riding a wooden sled pulled by a team of energetic huskies led by a professional musher. Experience the silent glide across vast, frozen landscapes, offering truly amazing natural beauty. After this unique outdoor experience, you’ll return to the city center, where you might explore nearby shops and restaurants. In the evening, unwind at the hotel’s rooftop Vana Spa. Relax in the warm pools and saunas, enjoying a drink at the bar as twilight settles over the horizon.

Day 3 – New Year’s Eve at Icehotel

After a hearty breakfast, enjoy your morning however you like, exploring Kiruna or just enjoying the winter peace. In the afternoon, you’ll visit the world-famous ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi. See its amazing ice art, walk through the beautiful ice rooms, and visit the well-known ICEBAR, where even your drink glass is made of ice. In the evening, you can choose to have a special New Year’s Eve dinner or go on a Northern Lights tour to complete your holiday celebration. Welcome 2026 your way: either with fireworks at the ICEHOTEL or by joining the lively parties in Kiruna’s city center.

Day 4 – Northern Lights 

Happy New Year! Enjoy your first morning at your own pace; sleep in, relax, or pick optional activities like snowmobiling or ice fishing. In the evening, you’ll head out on a Northern Lights tour by minibus. You’ll travel beyond city lights to top viewing spots, guided by experts. If conditions are right, you’ll witness the spectacular dance of the aurora borealis.

Day 5 – Departure Day

After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to the Arctic. Depending on your flight time, you may have a final moment to stroll through Kiruna or enjoy a last view of the snow-covered landscape. You’ll then be transferred to Kiruna Airport for your departure, taking with you memories of a New Year holiday wrapped in Northern magic.
