Luleå is located on the coast of Swedish Lapland. With a total of 1,300 islands its a unique environment. Between December and April the sea freezes up to a meter thick ice which is perfect for winter activities. During this unique short holiday in Luleå you can enjoy nature at its best and experience  activities like dog sledding and snowmobiling and have the chance to see the magical Northern lights.

Brändön Lodge

By arrival at Luleå Airport you will be welcomed by our guide who will drive you to Brändön Lodge, a genuine small scale accommodation by the sea, about 25 km north from the airport. The main building is a log cabin that includes a restaurant and a lounge and relaxation area. Surrounding the main building are 15 cabins overlooking the sea. Behind the lodge is forest, deep with snow in the winter, here you can find native animals such as reindeer, fox, eagle and moose. At Brändön lodge you will have your own 4 persons cabin with free view over the frozen sea.

On the first floor of the main building is the restaurant and bar, here all meals will be served.  The region offers amazing local produce and the food served is a big part of the experience. Natural flavours from game, berries and mushrooms come together on the plate. In the restaurant area you can also enjoy a drink or take your drink with you to your own cabin, sauna, hot tub or one of the small traditional houses on the waterside. This remote location is ideal for watching the Northern lights during the long polar nights.

ITINERARY

Short break in Lapland | Luleå – Swedish Lapland | 4 days / 3 nights

Arrival day – welcome in Swedish Lapland!

Arrival at Luleå airport based on your flight schedule, you will be welcomed by our local guide. When walking outside you walk straight into a winter wonderland, minus temperatures, clean air and a snow covered landscape. Your guide will drive you to Brändön Lodge, a genuine small scale accommodation by the sea, about 25 km north from the airport. From your own cabin you have an unique view over the frozen sea, with its endless fields of ice and snow where the the ice can freeze up to 1 meter thick. In the evening a 2 course meal from outstanding quality will be served in the main building, where you also can enjoy a drink at the bar or take a drink with you to your own bungalow.

Day 2 – Snowmobiling

Feel your blood rushing as you drive across a snow covered landscape. Snowmobiles allow you to feel the freedom of covering large areas in a short space of time, it’s a fabulous way to get around during wintertime. During the tour you will drive through the nearby forests and over frozen lakes. Your guide will ensure that you are at a comfort level suited to your ability. Along the way stops are made for hot beverages, where the guide will tell you about the surroundings and about life and nature in Swedish Lapland.

There are also sauna and hot tub facilities by your accommodation,  here you can relax your body and complete the living Swedish experience.The lodge has  a couple of reindeer on the property for guests to visit. After short instructions you are even allowed to feed and photograph them.

Day 3 – Dog Sledding 

After your breakfast you will be picked up for the transfer to the nearby Husky kennel.  As soon as they notice you, the dogs are enthusiastic and all eager to go. Going on a dog sledding tour is a unique experience in many ways. The strength of the dogs and their capability to pull the sled at high speed in the snow covered terrain, the crisp climate and stunning surroundings will give you a thrill never to be forgotten. After a safety briefing and instructions, you can choose to sit on the sledge and let the guide be in control or you can choose mushing your own dogsled team! The tours will go over frozen rivers and through wild forests, offering a great opportunity to see wildlife on the way. This iconic winter experience is sure to leave you with some fantastic memories. By return at Brändön lodge your warm lunch is ready to be served.

Day 4 – Departure day

After your breakfast, it’s time to check out. Our guide will assist you with your luggage and will drive you to Luleå Airport according your flight schedule.

HIGHLIGHTS YOU MIGHT EXPERIENCE

Moose

Moose is the largest of all the deer species. They reach 170 – 210 cm height at shoulder.  Bulls weigh weigh 380 – 850 kg and cows weigh 200 – 360 kg. Moose are solitary and do not live in families or herds. The calves follow the cow during one year. Their diet consists of both terrestrial and aquatic vegetation. During Summer when food is plentiful they typically feed on herbs and leaves. During Winter they survive on shrubs and buds from Pine trees.

Northern Lights

The bright dancing lights of the Northern Lights are collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere. The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres. Northern Lights appear in many colours and forms. Winter in the north is a good season to view the lights. The long periods of darkness and the frequency of clear nights provide many good opportunities to watch the Northern Lights.

Sami Culture

Sapmi is what the Sami call their land, an area that stretches over Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. In Sweden, Sapmi covers the most northern part. It is a nation without borders but not without a history, culture and a language, very much entwined with the reindeer

Gammelstad

Gammelstad Church Town is a UNESCO Word Heritage Site near the city of Luleå. It’s  a type of town that was once widespread throughout northern Scandinavia. It is home to a unique cultural environment. Here you can find the largest late medieval stone church in Northern Sweden, from 1492 and the largest and most  well-preserved church town in Sweden with more than 400 church cottages. Gammelstad  was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1996.

Dog Sledding Tour
